Analysis of the Jurors in 12 Angry Men :: Twelve Angry Men, Reginald Rose

Guilty or not guilty? This the key question during the murder trial of a young man accused of fatally stabbing his father. The play 12 Angry Men, by Reginald Rose, introduces to the audience twelve members of a jury made up of contrasting men from various backgrounds. One of the most critical elements of the play is how the personalities and experiences of these men influence their initial majority vote of guilty. Three of the most influential members include juror #3, juror #10, and juror #11. Their past experiences and personal bias determine their thoughts and opinions on the case. Therefore, how a person feels inside is reflected in his/her thoughts, opinions, and behavior. Juror #3 is very biased against the 19-year-old boy that is being tried, and this affects all of his thoughts and actions regarding the case. He has this bias because his own son hit him in the jaw and ran away from home at the age of 15: â€Å"I’ve got a kid†¦when he was fifteen he hit me in the face†¦I haven’t seen him in three years. Rotten kid! I hate tough kids! You work your heart out [but it’s no use] (21).†According to this quote from the text, this juror condemns all teenagers and feels resentment towards them. He especially feels strongly about the boy being tried, because the boy grew up in the slums, and this juror is also biased against these people who grew up there. It is because of these feelings that he is strongly cemented in his vote of guilty. Juror #10, a garage owner, segregates and divides the world stereotypically into ‘us’ and ‘them.’ ‘Us’ being people living around the rich or middle-class areas, and ‘them’ being people of a different race, or possessing a contrasting skin color, born and raised in the slums (poorer parts of town). It is because of this that he has a bias against the young man on trial, for the young man was born in the slums and was victim to domestic violence since the age of 5. Also, the boy is of a Hispanic descent and is of a different race than this juror, making him fall under the juror’s discriminatory description of a criminal. This is proven on when juror #10 rants: â€Å"They don’t need any real big reason to kill someone, either. You know, they get drunk, and bang, someone’s lying in the gutter†¦ most of them, it’s like they have no feelings (59).

Love and Arrange Marriage

There is always a thought in mind that love marriages don't last much or they are the best because of the couples understanding built before entering marriage. But it is nothing related to the marriage type when it comes to knowing each other and understanding levels. The understanding can be built if you have faith and trust apart from flexibility among the couple. Love marriage has the same benefits as arranged ones. Due to the time duration of knowing each other, couples have understanding which develops during their love affair. Because of this reason, many arrange marriage couples feel the lack of time duration which forms a base for developing understanding levels. But it is nothing like that to think about. They too develop good understanding which can be better than love marriage couples. Love and marriage are inseparable from each other in any kind of marriage. Just the time factor can't be the major reasons behind the success of marriage. Arrange marriage couples also have success in their marriage and comparison is just a way to deteriorate your own relationship. Be confident of your love and never let the thought of comparing love among these two marriage types enter your mind. If the proximity, understanding and love is low in any of these marriages, then it will end gradually and the reason should not be the type of marriage. Marriage like two sides of a coin comes with advantages and disadvantages. These are not dependent on the marriage types but the partners. So married couples, stop comparing love marriage vs arrange marriage and search for new ways to develop relationship with your spouse and not sticking to the question of which type of marriage is best for you. The Social Ecological Model (SEM) was created to develop an understanding of the relationships between an individual and their social surroundings. While many other models use narrowly conceived frameworks, the SEM considers multiple levels of influence. At the core of the model lies the individual, with three levels of social influence surrounding -- representing interpersonal relationships, organizational/community influence, and governmental policy action (CDC, 2015). Social Ecology is an all-encompassing body of work that seeks to establish theoretical frameworks by considering the interrelations of people and their distinct environmental factors related to health and wellness (Stokols, 1996). The SEM integrates individual approaches related to health behavior by utilizing interventions focusing on improving the physical and social surroundings. However, the SEM goes beyond environmental change by establishing theoretical models explaining the dynamic connections between individu als and their social settings. The social ecological model is derived from a multitude of research areas, but ultimately stems from the biological relationships between organisms and their environment. As such, greater attention was eventually brought towards developing an understanding of people and the social and cultural constructs surrounding them (Stokols, 1996).
